A Thousand Splendid Suns

The last 33 years of Afghanistan’s tumultuous history of war and oppression told on an intimate scale, through the lives of two women, Miriam and Laila. This novel is haunting and just as beautifully scripted as Hosseini’s last effort - The Kite Runner.
A bit hard to come by as it is still on the New York Times Bestseller List, don’t forget library card holders can download the audiobook for free through the link on the left.

Better late than never - I just finished the book and I have to say it was one of the most emotionally exhausting books I have ever read. My stomach ached while reading because I found so little to be hopeful about for the characters in this story. It makes western issues of underage drinking and divorce sound downright pleasant in comparison.
I did ponder the value of a burqa now and then…I would love to go to Malta Price Chopper “en burqa” and buy my potato chips and hotdogs without friends and neighbors checking out my shopping cart contents while we chat for a minute. Save me the trouble of picking up a “leafy green” item just in case I bump into anyone….

I had a great time last night! We welcomed another patron into the group. She LOVED the audio book. Sara surprised us with some ethnic eats from the book. I just love our little library. I started reading next months title…. It’s another winner.

We had a great time and a stupendous conversation! Figs, hummus, lavash, Chai Tea, and lots of laughter and disgust. You should have been there! Join us next month and see where it takes you…

Ladies - I will not be able to attend next Tuesday (girl’s gotta work). Like Sara I planned on listening to this story - I started but was trying to get paperwork done at the same time and did not engage in the story. I will try again and keep my multitasking to folding laundry and other chores. I get a lot of cleaning done when I am listening to a great story!

I took a friend’s advice and chose to listen to this month’s selection and was pleasantly surprised. The reader shares dialect and feeling in a way I would have missed reading it to myself. Enjoy but be ready to lose your breath!
When Rashid is whispering into Laila’s ear in the dark bedroom that Spring - your heart thumps and he is speaking to you… Very impressive.
