There is only one word to describe this book - looooong! The story is interesting as I know little of Egyptian history. I'm only on page 191 of this 1000 page book but I plan to share what I have read so far.

This was the book that I really wanted everyone to read this year. It is one of my favorite stories - and I think has one of the best book covers ever. I am listening to it on CD as I drive to and from work and feel I am transported far, far away from the Northway. I hope we see new faces at the bookgroup this month as this book I truly believe is designed to connect with the individual and there is no one correct interpretation. Enjoy! 3.14

I really enjoyed reading this book. (I couldn't wait for the posting to be placed online). It was another good read and monthly book choice.

Yann Martel brought the charector of Pi from child to adult in a recollection to a writer. Then it seemed the "Life of Pi", took over in the sea voyage portion of the story all the way through to the ending.

Parts were funny (LOL on several occasions), parts leave you with a better understanding of man, animals and understanding ones own inner faith. Which Pi lived by several. I loved it.

At preschool, we make it Green Day. Everyone wear something green, we finger-paint with blue and yellow (which makes green), and read either "Green Eggs and Ham" or "Clever Tom and the Leprechaun". Of course, just to stir things up a little bit, the leprechauns pay our classroom a visit the night before and play tricks on us (like switching toys around, turning things upside down) and hides a treasure for the children to find. I'm not sure who has more fun.

At home my Italian husband won't eat corn beef, so he takes me out to dinner. But this year I hope by then to be singing "Tura-Lura-Lural" to my 1st grandchild.

By telling everyone that I'm Hungarian. St. Stephen rocks! (Patron saint of Hungary FYI)

But since my brother-in-law, Padraic, is sooo Irish and his son (my nephew, Connor) was born on St. Pat's in 2006 - I'll be "Irish" for a day by adding green food coloring to all my cooking - yum!

Not having any Irish in my heritage, my friends (not Irish either) and I get together to watch the parades, crack open the Guinness and have corned beef & cabbage. I'll call my friends who are named Patrick and thank them for their Saint-like qualities. Then we pinch those around us who aren't wearing green.

Better late than never - I just finished the book and I have to say it was one of the most emotionally exhausting books I have ever read. My stomach ached while reading because I found so little to be hopeful about for the characters in this story. It makes western issues of underage drinking and divorce sound downright pleasant in comparison.

I did ponder the value of a burqa now and then...I would love to go to Malta Price Chopper "en burqa" and buy my potato chips and hotdogs without friends and neighbors checking out my shopping cart contents while we chat for a minute. Save me the trouble of picking up a "leafy green" item just in case I bump into anyone....

As a child, my father stressed the fact that we had no Irish blood - only Scottish. So - we were forced to wear orange on Saint Patrick's Day in protest rather than wear green like everyone else! Too funny (sorry Shan!)

Do you think this author has problems with books that do not end all neat and tiday wth every question answered and every loose end perfectly tied? I liked all the twists at the end, but the last little bit where she has to clarify every little thing is such an anticlimax to such an eloquently written story. It sound like a fifth grader wrote the last two pages with the typical "in conclusion" style of ending something you can't find a more creative way to end - loose ends are a part of life - because life goes on and never ends all neat and tidy!

BTW - Since this book is about "birth" stories - let's all share ours at the meeting - and we're celebrating mine and Tina's who are this week!

The character who really bugs me throughout this book is Margaret's mother.
There are so many women who lose a child and do not completely igmore their other LIVING children. In the words of Carolyn Aldridge, who has endured a lot more than Margaret's mother, "GET OVER IT!!!!"

NO! She was a child with a scar. OK, I have never been a twin.... but, a child that is lost through co-existance from a shared body part. Alot of parents have had to make that decision. I felt for her mother, she never was the same again.

Was Margret torn with what happened to her twin, or just missing her twin? I feel she was too young to remember a twin.

I just finished this book and I have to say I loved it. Whenever an author jumps back and forth in time I am leery - it isn't an easy thing to pull off. The way Diane Setterfield handled the timing makes you feel the frustration of Margaret. I wanted to scream every time Vida got tired or angry and sent Margaret away. It was a great chance to see the ramifications of the storyline from the past - but still.

Any book that can leave you emotional after a chapter is a great book for me - whatever the emotion. This should be a great discussion for February!

Did you really buy all the lamentations of Margaret over her lost twin though?

I thought the story started off a little slow, but once the two women meet it has you "hooked" as Devon says. I have always wondered what it would be like to have a twin - a person who was once the same cell as yourself - but a different person altogether. I love how Emmeline is described as being able to "smell" the presence of her sister in the house.
