How do I use Instant Help?
- Stay where you are! When you ask Sara or Michele a question within the Instant Help box, you have to give us just a few minutes to respond. This means you should not leave the page. If you do, you will not get our response because the page refreshes.
- What time is it? If you are asking your question after hours - leave us your email address. We will get your message, and respond as soon as we open the next day.
How do I get a library card?
- If you are over the age of 16, just fill out the application and bring it to the library with a form of ID.
- If you are under the age of 16, a parent or guardian must bring you to the library and sign the form with you.
What if I lose my library card?
- The SFL does not require your physical card when an ID will work, but many libraries do. If you lose your card, you can get a replacement - but we charge $1.
Can we have a family card?
- We highly encourage you to empower your children with their own library card, however, you may opt for a family library card at the SFL.
- Special Permissions must signed for each user.
- You may not exceed the maximum fine amount.
How many items can I request through Inter-Library loan at a time?
- 3 New and Popular Books
- 10 materials total
How long can I have the materials for?
- New Books - 3 weeks, 0 renewals
- Books - 3 weeks, 2 renewals
- DVDs - 1 week, 2 renewals
- Magazines - 1 week, 2 renewals
What are the fines if I am late?
- Books and magazines are 5¢ per day.
- DVDs and VHS are 50¢ per day.
- The maximum amount we charge per item is $5.00.
What are the maximum amount of fines I can carry and still get out materials?
- Your account may carry $10.00 maximum. If you have decided to go with a family card, this applies to you as well.
How many items can I check out?
- DVD limit is 3 throughout the Southern Adirondack Library System. If you get one DVD at the three different libraries, you have met the limit.
- VHS is unlimited at the SFL.
- You may have 40 items out at a time.
What is “Read Around the Room”?
- As your children grow, you can watch them advance from board books to picture books, E-Z Readers to every level of independent reading. We have arranged our children’s section so different colors mark their advancement in reading. Stay with us and watch your children progress around the room!

- We are right on Hudson Avenue (NYS Route 4). In the village of Stillwater, we are right across the street from the Mobil Station. Parking is available in the rear of the building accessible by Bunce Lane located to our South.
When was your library started?
- 1949 we began in a tannery shack in the village, then in 1959 we moved to our current location. This building used to be St. John’s Episcopal church and was built in 1874. She’s beautiful and you ought to stop in to visit!
