I think we all have a preconceived idea of who Martha Washington was and the picture on the cover simply invites the reader to learn more about this truly precedent setting American woman. I find I learn more about the day to day lives and get to know famous historical figures as real people when a story is focused on women. The book addresses so many questions that are not in history books that focus on George - travelling, home life, family, schooling, health issues, relationships. The most interesting tidbit for me was that George Washington died of epiglottitis - which most of you have probably never heard of - but I had when I was twelve years old. I was slowly suffocating to death as my epiglottis swelled and blocked air to my lungs. Luckily I was taken to the hospital and they were ready to do a tracheotomy - however I sucked on popscicles all night and the swelling was down by morning. With Washington they tried leaches and purges and other useless 18 century techniques and he died. Just goes to show - you never know what you may take away from ANY book you decide to read!

This book had some meat to it and was historically accurate!
I was surprised that HE took her wealth into consideration, but at least he admitted it.

The cover photo is a painting done by Micahel J. Deas. Here is
    a link to his website.

Definitely not what we think of, but a beautiful portrait none the less!
